This was a popular practice for theaters, because once a movie was done with its run, old movie prints could be acquired cheaply. I'm guessing it's more accurate to say that this scan looks like it would in a theater playing old movie prints. I just take issue with the idea that Star Wars looked like this in 1977. I'm not saying that there is no real-world analog to this minimally-restored print. So you're saying if I went to a theater in 1977, pretty much any print of any new-release movie would look crappy? Why? What is in the process from negative to print introduces inherent debris? Every movie was like this? The whole point is that the 'Silver Screen Edition''s stated purpose is to look like a probably rather mediocre screening in a generic movie theater in 1977, and I doubt that that was a feast for the eyes.
